Peer Specialist

A Peer Specialist will help build a supportive relationship with the peer that will foster self discovery and trust. Each partnership will work toward specific goals that will assist the peer in the development of advocacy, choice, and empowerment that leads to Mental Health Recovery.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Full Time – Occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Good Computer skills, Documentation skills, and Time Management skills required.
  • Provides Individual Peer Support in the Community
  • Identifies strengths and barriers to create a plan for skill development
  • Advocates to create a community connection and linkage to natural and paid supports
  • Able to adapt work schedule to meet the program and client needs
  • Able to meet weekly Managed Care requirements for assessment, documentation and billing
  • Committed to Quality Services
  • Demonstrates a thoughtful approach to transition planning

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and own transportation
  • Must have New York State Peer Specialist certification – or – provisional certification
  • This includes
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, at least 1 year of relevant experience working with individuals with Substance Use Disorder and/or Serious Mental Illness
    • Must have personal experience in developing recovery from a Mental Health diagnosis
    • Must have completed Core Training on Academy of Peer Services


  • 2 or more years’ experience providing Peer Support
  • Knowledgeable of HARP HCBS including Empowerment Peer Support, Habilitation, Psycho-social Rehabilitation, Family Support and Training and Pre-Vocational Services
  • Multilingual a plus
